optical fibre sensor radiation dosimeter radioluminescence radiotherapy magnetic field effects
This paper presents the initial investigation into the effects of magnetic field on the luminescence response of a plastic optical fibre based dosimeter. The optical fibre sensor is based on radioluminescence, whereby a PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) plastic optical fibre is coated with radiation sensitive inorganic scintillator, Terbium-doped Gadolinium Oxysulphide (Gd2O2S: Tb), that fluoresce when exposed to ionising radiation. The sensor has shown a non-linear decrease in optical intensity for increasing magnetic field. However this effect demonstrated good repeatability, allowing for the possibility of using correction factors in the employment of such sensors near known magnetic fields.
